Dermatologists often recommend fish-oil supplements to treat acne and atopic dermatitis (a type of eczema) and even to help slow down the aging process. The omega-3 fatty acids in the oil take down inflammation, improve the skin’s lipid barrier, and actually help extend the lifespan of cells—improving the overall texture and tone of the skin. But there’s often an embarrassing side effect that comes with taking this amazing oil: burping.
Turns out, there are non-gas-inducing alternatives that don’t leave your breath smelling like the crew from Deadliest Catch. “The burping is caused by the oxidation that occurs as soon as the fish is caught,” explains dermatologist Jeannette Graf. The more oxygen allowed into the fish—in other words, the more time there is between catching the fish and separating out the oil—the more it will cause you to belch. So you want supplements “where the oil-extraction process is the fastest and antioxidants are quickly added in,” Graf says, adding that “burp-free” supplements are often labeled that way on the packaging. She recommends the ones from Sea-Logix, OmegaBrite, and Nordic Naturals.
