How Fish is Made is an absurd and unsettling narrative-driven experience where a sardine flops their way through a large machine towards a destiny that they can choose.
In How Fish is Made you control a little sardine as it makes its way through a large fish processing machine. As you flop your way through the machine you’ll meet other fish who you can chat to. Most of whom all have their own opinions on whether you should choose to go up or down when you reach the end of the machine. Some of the fish may still be undecided about which way to go, so you can influence their choice. When you get to the end though, the final choice is up to you.
Taking around 25 minutes to pay through, it’s an interesting experience that definitely seems to be an allegory for something else. The way How Fish is Made’s fish all have their own strong opinions on what the best way is (when in reality nobody knows for sure) is a mindset which is rather prevalent in these polarised times (and has always been prevalent in religion). The way you can manipulate less strong-willed fish to go the way you want them to go is interesting too. And there’s also a wonderfully groups song and dance number about the fish industry and parasites. It all makes for a fascinating experience that will have you hooked!
