Over the years, I have been transparent about my mental health journey. I’m not going to lie, it’s been a journey with lots of ups and downs, but over the past couple of months, I have made a lot of really huge changes to truly improve my mental health and my life overall.
In the past couple of years, not only did the world go through a pandemic, I was pregnant in 2020, gave birth to the most handsome little boy, and then motherhood and postpartum hit me like a truck. I suffered from postpartum depression and anxiety that started a couple months after Bentley was born. I was thankful to have an extended maternity leave, but once I returned to work, my anxiety and the mom guilt overwhelmed me. I was working upwards of 60+ hours a week, and my mental health deteriorated more than ever before.
I found myself at a new low, crippled with anxiety that led to tossing and turning at night, unable to sleep, and essentially unrecognizable to myself and my family. It wasn’t until I made the decision to leave the job I once loved that turned into a toxic, anxiety-ridden environment. That was two months ago, and in those months, I started an amazing new job, I’m working on healing from mental trauma, and I’m learning to love myself again. Healing isn’t something that happens overnight, it takes time. It takes acknowledging your feelings, what you’ve been through, and choosing to move forward for yourself and for your family. For me, it’s healing to be present for my son, to be the happy mama he deserves, and to be who I truly am, and it all started with changing a few things in my everyday routine.
I wanted to share with you three things I do every day to improve my mental health.
One // Practice self-love
As a mama, there are so many things I can choose to be unhappy about, most of all, with my body. The stretch marks from carrying my son for 9 months, the five extra pounds I can’t seem to lose–I mean, the list can go on and on, but when I find myself talking negatively about myself or my body, I remind myself that without those things, I wouldn’t have my sweet boy that I love wholeheartedly.
We are our biggest critics, and it’s the intrusive thoughts and our own negative self-talk that bring us down. Do one thing for yourself every day. It could be something as simple as sitting in silence doing your skincare routine or reading a few pages in your new book. Choose yourself over everything for once–you deserve it and need to do it to heal.
Two // Use the Fisher Wallace Stimulator
As I’m practicing self-love, I add another amazing layer of love. I have been using the Fisher Wallace Stimulator for a little over a month now, and it has helped with my insomnia and anxiety. How to use the Fisher Wallace Stimulator
Once you receive your device, you simply wet the included sponges in the holder. You then attach the white caps to the wires and insert the wires into their respective color-coordinating plugs. Then, put on the included headband above your eyebrows, and place the sponge applicators under the headband near your temples. If you have long hair, make sure you put them under your hair so they are as close to your scalp as possible.
You can then turn on your device (most use it on level 2) and relax as the device works its magic. I love to watch a show on my tablet in bed or relax on the couch with Bentley and watch one of his shows before his bedtime. After 20 minutes, the device will beep and turn off automatically, and you can turn off the device’s switch.

Three // Go for a walk
The sunshine works wonders for your soul. I try to get outside every day to walk around my neighborhood or even a local park. I know there are some days where you can’t make it out due to weather and life in general, but really make an effort to get out there. Not only is it good for you physically, but it’s also healing mentally to enjoy nature and move.
My favorite walks are with my son and husband, and I love meeting up with friends to go on walks, too. It feels good to chat about life and get those steps in–and when I say to get out and go for a walk, I don’t mean for miles on end. It could honestly be a quick loop around your neighborhood, down the street, or my favorite walks of all, the ones that end with ice cream.
It’s the little things that bring joy & happiness to our lives, and we’ve got to start putting ourselves first to live the beautiful life we’re meant to live.
